Object to the MSV plan for Westwood St, Moss Side
Support the community plan for a Manchester Caribbean Quarter
The Moss Side Community Protest Action Group says “No” to high density housing development next to our West Indian Sports Social Club and Community Centre (WISSC), Westwood Street, Moss Side, M14 4SW. The WISSC has been a cornerstone of our community for decades. It serves as a hub for cultural events, sports activities and social gatherings. However, there are plans to construct a high-density housing development right next to the club that could have detrimental effects on its operation.
The proposed construction would bring in hundreds of new residents into the local area, impacting local services and available parking. Most importantly, it would restrict the holding of social events and the enjoyment of people who use the club facilities. This development is not in line with the community social, economic, and cultural needs. We urge local authorities not to approve this plan.
We the undersigned object to the MSV plan for Westwood St, Moss Side, not because it proposes to build 300-400 housing units, but because the proximity of some of the houses presents a threat to the existence of the West Indian Sports & Social Club (WISSC), the density of housing in Moss Side is one of the highest in the City and local services including GP services are already overwhelmed, it fails to meet the other requirements of the development brief for cultural and economic regeneration for Manchester’s Caribbean community!
There has been a West Indian Sports and Social Club & community centre (WISSC) on Westwood St, Moss Side, since the 1950s. This is the cultural and geographical heart of the Manchester’s Caribbean community. The MSV plan surrounds WISSC with housing which will inevitably lead to complaints from new residents. Both the Nia Centre in Hulme and the West Indian Centre on Carmoor Rd, Ardwick, suffered from complains of noise nuisance after serving the community for decades when new housing was built close to them.
The West Indian Sports and Social Club and community cohesion is threatened by the MSV plan!
